Serpentine Horned Toad by Loren Tsalabutie

A large plump, personable green and black spotted serpentine horned toad with turquoise inlaid eyes carved by Loren Tsalabutie. Loren has carved the horns on the head of the reptile then left the center of the back nicely polished - only incising the ridges all along the edges of the face and back - quite imaginatively realized, we think! Loren has given the toad a coral necklace/offering bundle. The horned toad lizard represents longevity and self-reliance and there's a link in Zuni belief between the horned toad & lightning; deriving from the zigzag spikes and horns found on the head and ridges on the back.
