Antler Bear with Cub by Raymond Tsalate

A darling small cream and gray colored antler bear with its cub - carved by Ray Tsalate - delivered to Sunshine Studio in March of 2023. Both bears have burnished ears and tails, lapis inlaid eyes and hand made pen shell snout. Ray has strategically put the porous gray marrow area on lower portion of the father bear's face - resembling a twelve o'clock shadow. Ray then placed the golden gray spotted marrow area between the cub's ears, on the back of the neck and on the top of the its back. For the Zuni, the bear is an animal endowed with strength, adaptability, courage and healing powers - in both the physical and spiritual realm. The bear’s association with healing may have stemmed from its ability to hibernate during seasonal changes in order to conserve its food supply and energy. Animals carved with their offspring - address the diligence and love it takes to raise a child - no matter the species.
