Purisima, Crawstone ( Limestone with Embedded Shells, Baja California, Mexico) Buffalo by Andres Lementino - Zuni Fetish

A striking resting buffalo with turquoise inlaid eyes carved in the a lovely olive green purisima. Purisima is limestone imbedded with shells - mostly found in the Baja area of California and Mexico. Carved by Andres Lementino, the buffalo has one of his Zuni Sun faces inlaid to the buffalo's left side - inlaid with bits of spiny oyster, coral, turquoise, jet and clam shell to name most. The buffalo is not a traditional subject for Zuni carvers though the medicine it brings is needed - so the buffalo is carved by many of the artists and the dance is performed in Zuni. The buffalo is carved by Zuni artists to help mankind overcome obstacles, build up emotional courage and physical strength plus to bring abundance and initiate prayerfulness.
