Zuni Rock (travertine) Turtle With Hatchling by Gayla Eriacho - Zuni Fetish

A golden/yellow ocher mother turtle with penn shell inlaid eyes carved by Gayla Eriacho with the baby hatchling on her back - carved from the same stone. The hatchling has a green/malachite & blue/azurite inlaid shell. Animals carved with their offspring suggests in stone the bond that exists between the mother and child. Indigenous people recognize the turtle as the symbol of Mother Earth - some Native Americans believe that the turtle contributed to creation because the turtle dove into the primeval waters to retrieve mud to create Mother Earth. The turtle is regarded as a skillful navigator through life's difficulties. Turtle medicine teaches one to go with the flow, due to the turtle's proclivity to go with the current.
