4387013 | Genuine Cummins® Ignition Control Module

Description: An Ignition Control Module (ICM) 4387013 is an electronic component in an engine's ignition system that controls the timing and firing of the spark plugs. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the engine runs smoothly and efficiently by managing when and how the ignition coil sends voltage to the spark plugs. Part Number: 4387013, 4387013RX Condition: New Manufacture/Brand: Cummins Fits 4387013 For Cummins engine systems EPA13 12 liter ISX/QSX Engine / Model Years / Notes Role / Use Cummins ISX‑12 G / ISLG ~2013–2018 Ignition control / module in natural gas / gas variants Cummins ISL‑G Also cited in some part listings Same module used in ISL‑G lines Purpose of using 4387013: Controls Spark Timing It determines when each spark plug fires, based on input from sensors (like the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors). Activates the Ignition Coil(s) It tells the ignition coil(s) when to send high voltage to the spark plugs, creating the spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture. Ensures Efficient Combustion Proper ignition timing leads to optimal engine power, smooth operation, lower emissions, and better fuel economy. Coordinates with the Engine Control Module (ECM) In modern engines, the ICM works closely with or as part of the ECM to adapt timing to various conditions like engine load, speed, and temperature. Signs of a Bad Ignition Control Module 4387013   1. Engine Misfires Random or frequent misfires Especially noticeable under load or during acceleration Caused by incorrect spark timing or no spark delivery 2. Engine Won’t Start (No Spark) Cranks, but doesn’t start Fuel may still flow, but there's no spark to ignite it Complete failure of the ICM = no ignition coil activation 3. Stalling or Sudden Shutoff Engine may run fine for a while and then suddenly shut off Often happens after the engine warms up Can restart after cooling down — classic thermal failure sign 4. Heat-Related Failure Starts and runs cold, but stalls when hot Heat can cause expansion or internal breakdown in the module May resume function once cooled 5. Check Engine Light (CEL) Onboard diagnostics detect ignition or misfire issues Common codes: P0300–P0306 (misfire detected) P0351–P0362 (ignition coil control circuit fault) Custom fault codes in heavy-duty engines like Cummins ISX12G 6. Poor Acceleration or Engine Hesitation Engine hesitates or bogs down during throttle input Spark isn’t timed correctly or is too weak to ignite mixture 7. Backfiring Spark firing at the wrong time causes fuel to ignite in exhaust Loud popping noise from exhaust or intake 8. Low or No Spark Output Weak or no signal to the ignition coil Can be tested with a spark tester or diagnostic scan tool About the Manufacturer – Cummins: Cummins is a leading American manufacturer of diesel and natural gas engines, as well as power generation systems and emissions solutions.
