The earliest form of bird shaped stork scissors were actually clamps used by midwives in the 19th century to stop blood flow in a newborn's umbilical cord. Due to the longtime association of storks and babies, these clamps were shaped like storks. Midwives often stored their medical tools alongside their sewing and embroidery kits.
