The development of each piece calls upon a breadth of knowledge and honed skill, from the proportion of each glaze to the sensitive transformations that occur in firing due to variances in temperature or humidity. The Ceramic Lab series items possess a humble simplicity and undeniable charm. The texture of rough clay contrasted by quietly refined color glazing gives the impression of natural, quarried stone. Composed of sandstone unique to the Hasami region, materiality is a mix of sand and rock together with Amakusa porcelain stone mined from Amakusa islands. Durable, nuanced, and expressive details arise from the sandstone’s natural iron reacting with the glaze.
