2021 Rustenberg 'John X Merriman' Stellenbosch

Rustenberg is one of the oldest and most respected estates in South Africa, with roots dating back to 1682. The Barlow family has guided the property for generations, focusing on Cabernet-based reds that bridge the gap between Old World restraint and New World ripeness. The “John X Merriman” is named after a former owner and one of South Africa’s great statesmen, a man who helped revive the estate in the late 19th century. Today, the wine that bears his name stands as Rustenberg’s signature Bordeaux blend, prized for its polish, structure, and timeless appeal. Situated on the granite slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains in Stellenbosch, Rustenberg’s vineyards benefit from cool maritime breezes from False Bay and clay-rich soils that give power and depth. The 2021 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, matured in French oak barrels for 18 months - just enough to frame the fruit without overshadowing it.
