Authentic 1920s Dance Set Downloads These 1920s Dance Set Downloads reproduce Home Pattern Company Pattern 6223, originally offered through Ladies’ Home Journal. The coordinated late-1920s lingerie ensemble includes a side-closing bandeau and two-piece panties with pointed yokes, reinforced facings, provisions for garter supporters, and a reinforced crotch. The downloadable pattern includes bust sizes 32–44 with separate B, C, and D cup options. Pattern numbering and dated magazine evidence suggest that Pattern 6223 was released around August 1929. An April 1929 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal featured comparable brassiere-and-panties ensembles numbered through 6132. Because Pattern 6223 follows those designs numerically, August 1929 is a reasonable estimated publication date, although an original advertisement confirming the exact month has not yet been located. Design Details Included with the 1920s Dance Set Downloads The original Home Pattern Company description identifies Pattern 6223 as a “Ladies’ and Misses’ Dance Set, consisting of a Side-Closing Bandeau, Two-Piece Panties with Pointed Yokes and Reinforced Facings Underneath Top for Garter Supporters, and Reinforced at Crotch.” The bandeau is constructed from separate front and back sections with bust darts, narrow ribbon shoulder straps, a wide lower band, and a side opening. The matching panties use separate pointed front and back yokes joined to loose lower sections. Reinforced facings strengthen the upper edge and provide placement for garter supporters. These details make the ensemble suitable for creating functional period underwear as well as historically informed theatrical or display garments. Lightweight bandeaux offered an alternative to earlier, more structured foundation garments, while loose panties and tap-pant styles reduced the number and weight of undergarment layers. The Underpinnings Museum’s historical collection notes that tap pants became popular during the 1920s as an alternative to the more cumbersome layers associated with Edwardian underwear. The pointed yokes, lace banding, and clean geometric lines of Pattern 6223 also reflect the decorative influence of late-1920s design. An April 1929 Ladies’ Home Journal feature titled “Lingerie for the Bride” illustrated several comparable garments. Pattern 6047 was described as a lace-trimmed panties-and-brassiere ensemble with side openings and a gathered lace waistband. This contemporary example places Pattern 6223 within the period’s movement toward coordinated lingerie that combined comfort, practicality, and decorative detailing. Sizes and Cup Options The 1920s Dance Set Downloads include bust sizes 32 through 44 inches with B, C, and D cup options. This expanded multi-size range makes the pattern more adaptable than many surviving vintage lingerie patterns, which were originally issued in only one size. Bust 32 inches Bust 34 inches Bust 36 inches Bust 38 inches Bust 40 inches Bust 42 inches Bust 44 inches B, C, and D cup options included The instructions include additional guidance for increasing fullness through the bust. Lightweight silk and cotton lingerie fabrics are appropriate choices. Past Patterns founder Saundra Altman cautioned that silk used for dance sets during the 1920s often did not ravel, while modern silk may require additional edge finishing.
