17923-1

First published in 1747, then revised and republished many times, this book was a bestseller in England and the United States for over 100 years. The book was revolutionary because Grasse dismissed fussy French cooking as impractical and wasteful. She focused on straightforward preparation of standard Anglo-American fare, words that domestic staff could understand rather than high-falutin' language, and ingredients most people could easily find. The book includes preparations for illnesses. We could all use a certain cure for the bite of a mad dog and a receipt against the plague. The book has sections and a helpful index in the back. Previous owner signature inside front cover "M: Broom Edinburgh March 3 1782." Orignal covers are not attached. Book is sold as is. "A New Addition" (5th edition) adds an appendix, 150 new receipts, and "a copious index."  London. 1770.  $400.00
