This book centers on five Black sailors whose experiences of slavery and insurrection either inspired or found resonance within fiction. Working across US literary studies, African American studies, and literature of the African diaspora, Atlantic history, oceanic studies, the colonial period, and the Early Republic, Warren tells a new story about the troubled history of abolition and violence. Real and fictional histories of mutiny and insurrection play a complex part in how we understand armed rebellion as a response to slavery. Bucknell University Press. 2019. Paper. NEW. $32.00
