Introduction by Joan Huddleston, Associate Professor of English at University of Queensland, Australia. Norton lost her children and her income from her writing when her husband divorced her in 1836, even though he lost his suit against her. This is the book she wrote to explain the legal state and her suffering. Published in 1854, this book had a profound effect. The divorce laws were reformed in 1857, and other changes were made in later years, much due to Norton's plea for justice. This copy is highlighted throughout. Academy Chicago, 1982. Paper.
