We love crossing disciplines and here is a masterpiece. Kareem skillfully convinces us that the Age of Reason and the Gothic novel were part of the same transition in thought that worked its way through the 18th century. From Robinson Crusoe to Jane Austen and Mary Shelley, from David Hume to Michael Faraday, the new sense of wonder involved both skepticism and imagined possibility. This is a fresh reading of works like Gulliver's Travels, Tom Jones, The Castle of Otranto, Northanger Abbey, and Frankenstein, alongside the new natural philosophy, as well as shocking political revolutions and new ideas of individuality. Originally published in 2014, newly available in paperback in 2019. Oxford University Press. Paper. NEW. $32.00
