What is the typical yield percentage from rough ruby to finished gemstone? When faceting raw Afghan rubies, the typical yield is around 25%–40% of the original rough weight. The exact percentage depends on clarity, inclusions, fractures, and the crystal shape. For example, from your 150-carat ruby lot, you can expect about 37–55 carats of finished gemstones. Stones with fewer surface-reaching inclusions and good hexagonal form usually provide the highest yield. 2. How do treatments and enhancements affect the value of rough rubies? Untreated rubies like your Afghan parcel hold the highest market value because collectors and jewelers prefer natural, authentic gemstones. Treated rubies (such as heated or glass-filled) are often brighter but worth significantly less per carat. Natural rubies with no treatments are rare, making them more desirable for investment gemstones, lapidary artists, and jewelry designers. 3. What tools and equipment do I need to start faceting rough rubies? To facet natural ruby rough, you need: A reliable faceting machine with angle control Diamond cutting laps (coarse for shaping, fine for polishing) Dop sticks and wax/epoxy to hold stones securely A microscope or loupe to evaluate inclusions Water drip system to keep stones cool while cutting Because rubies rank 9 on the Mohs scale, they are extremely hard and require industrial diamond tools for successful faceting. 4. What are the common shapes and cuts for faceted rubies? The most popular ruby cuts include: Oval cut – maximizes weight and highlights color saturation Cushion cut – adds brilliance to thicker rough stones Round cut – ideal for brilliance but sacrifices more weight Pear and marquise cuts – perfect for elongated crystals Cabochon – often chosen for included or semi-transparent rubies From your lot, the hexagonal crystals are best suited for oval and cushion cuts, while smaller included pieces may be polished into cabochons. 5. How to avoid buying synthetic or treated rough rubies mistakenly? To ensure you are buying genuine natural ruby rough: Look for natural growth zoning and uneven crystal shapes (synthetics look “too perfect”) Check for inclusions like silk, mica, or mineral traces — proof of natural formation Ask for a gemological lab report (e.g., GIA, AGL, IGI) when buying higher-value lots Buy from trusted suppliers who specialize in natural Afghan rubies and corundum Avoid parcels that appear overly bright, glassy, or completely flawless — signs of synthetic or treated stones
