"Parisian Alley" by Clark Fay, Amer., 1894-1955)

Lithograph, 1930's, ed. unknown, printed by Desjobert, Paris, 15-3/8 x 12, unsigned, on thin gray chine colle, affixed to a thick white wove support sheet, the image fine, scattered foxing and some marginal water staining to lower left corner of support sheet. While this print and others I have handled by the artist in the past 20 years have all been unsigned, the mystery of his identity was finally solved for me by print scholar Janet Flint, who recognized his work immediately. Originally an illustrator who studied with Harvey Dunn and N. C. Wyeth, then later a printmaker, Clark Fay divided his career between the Westport, CT art community and Paris. This bleak Paris scene, typical long after both wars, reminds one of Adolf Dehn, who worked as well with Desjobert, and may have perhaps crossed paths and compared notes in Paris with Fay. This is the only impression of this print I've seen.
